Eye Symptoms and Acupuncture

Our sight is one of the most important ways we engage with the world.  When we have problems with our eyes, simple daily tasks can even become difficult.  Throughout the UK, millions of people suffer with eye issues, whether it is itchy, red, watery eyes from hay fever or degenerating vision from ageing or dry, gritty, blurry eyes from the eye strain associated with frequent computer use.  Eye problems are very common, and there are generally only a handful of solutions, eye drops or ointments, surgery or glasses. Sometimes these are permanent solutions, but often times they are not and the symptoms continue with only short periods of temporary relief.  What many people may not realise, however, is that there is a safe, natural, effective and lasting solution, and that is acupuncture.

Acupuncture addresses the symptoms of eye problems and disorders, like when the eyes are dry, itchy, painful, swollen, burning, watery, gritty, redblurry, or light sensitive.  If you have any of these symptoms, acupuncture can offer you genuine and lasting relief.  It can quickly moisten dry or gritty eyes, energise tired eyes, or relieve sources of pain or irritation.  By delivering a healthy flow of blood, nutrients and oxygen to the eyes, acupuncture can relieve some of even the most persistent symptoms and with regular treatment can bring about optimum eye health.  Especially if you have an eye condition for which you have tried other methods of treatment with little or no success, acupuncture may be your answer.

Eye Treatment |Dry Eyes | Eye Pain

In modern life, there are many causes of dry eyes, like the effects of central air and heating, computer screens, pollution, late nights and long days, extended stints of reading or studying.  As well, dry eyes can come with ageing.  Regardless of the cause, acupuncture can quickly revitalise the eyes and generally within 2 – 3 treatments eliminate their dryness altogether with lasting results.  For symptoms like the sensation of grit in the eyes or the feeling of having something in the eye, like a grain of sand or an eyelash, but yet there is nothing there, acupuncture can be especially effective in treating these symptoms with complete relief generally in 1 – 3 treatments.

For eye pain, acupuncture can offer fast, longterm relief. Even if the pain is from optic neuritis, injury, inflammation, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, whatever the cause, acupuncture can help.  To alleviate the eye pain, electro-acupuncture (a safe and pain-free modality) is used and to great effect, helping to address both the pain and the underlying causes of the pain by naturally and effectively enhancing the flow of blood and fluids to and around the eyes.  Most cases of eye pain can generally be resolved in 2 – 6 treatments.

With all eye treatments, the needles used are tiny and all points are outside the orbital ridge, so no need to worry about the needles being too close to the eyes.  What is most important is that treatment has immediate effect, so if you arrive with dry, painful, swollen or itchy eyes, you will leave with more comfortable, less swollen and refreshed eyes.  With regular weekly treatment, issues with the eyes can be greatly helped, and often times, within 2 – 8 treatments, symptoms are significantly diminished or alleviated altogether.

Treatment of Eye Conditions in Children

Acupuncture can also be very effective in the treatment of eye conditions in children. When the eyes are still developing as they are in children, acupuncture can have a very powerful effect.  In many cases, it can even reverse conditions such as myopia (shortsightedness), strabismus (crossed-eyes), and amblyopia (lazy eye) if addressed before the child reaches a certain age.  With myopia and amblyopia, for example, treatment needs to begin before the age of fourteen, and with strabismus, treatment needs to begin before the age of eight.  Few parents are aware that there are other means of improving their child’s shortsightedness or amblyopia than glasses or patches and that there are other means of trying to reverse their child’s strabismus than surgery.  In the treatment of eye conditions in children, acupuncture can often offer a lasting solution.

Efficacy of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Eye Conditions

To learn more about the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of eyes, have a look at the links below.  There is currently a growing body of evidence from clinical randomised control trials for the treatment of eye disorders with acupuncture.  Listed on the NLM website (National Library of Medicine), the primary medical resource of the United States government, are reports from some of these trials evaluating acupuncture’s effect on specific eye conditions:  Dry Eyes, Glaucoma, Oculomotor Impairment, Dry Eye Syndrome, Diabetic Paralytic Squint, and Amblyopia (lazy eye).  There is also a report MedicineNet.com about a recent study done into the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of Amblyopia (lazy eye) in Children and a report on WebMD about a German study into the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of Hay Fever Symptoms.
