Proven as an effective means of treating all types of headaches, acupuncture can be a safe and natural alternative or addition to Western medical treatment.
In fact, many people think that there are no reliable treatment alternatives to what Western medicine has to offer. They come to believe that they have not choice but to rely on medications for the rest of their lives or otherwise suffer the painful consequences. But these medications can generally have quite strong side effects, especially if they are taken regularly or over a long period of time. If they are simply painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, with frequent use, they can damage the kidneys and liver. If they are stronger drugs like triptans, side effects can include feelings of heat and heaviness, dry mouth, nausea, and often times quite significant drowsiness (especially if taken with anti-emetics), and for women who are pregnant, these medications can pose potential harm to the baby. There is, however, a natural and very effective alternative, and that is acupuncture. In most cases, following a course of acupuncture treatment, these drugs can be abandoned.
Treatment for Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and migraines are a condition that is nearly always influenced by at least some aspect of a person’s diet, and this aspect can either be causing the headaches or worsening them. Since Chinese medicine has at its root an understanding of diet and how different foods, drinks and spices affect the body, then someone coming for a headache treatment is also given dietary advice that helps, if implemented, to immediately reduce headaches and lead to a long-term solution.
In the treatment of headaches and migraines, regardless of their strength or frequency, acupuncture can provide genuine and lasting relief. Results are often exceptional and in many cases, acupuncture can help when nothing else seems to work. Recommended by NICE (National Institute for Heath and Care Excellence) as an effective means of treating both tension-type headaches and migraines (with or without aura), acupuncture can also relieve other types of headaches, including those that are dull or persistent in nature. The suggestions in the NICE Guidelines are also noted on the NHS Choices website as being beneficial in preventing chronic tension-type headaches. No matter what kind of headaches you have, whether they are chronic or episodic, one-sided or bilateral, severe or mild, whatever qualities they have, acupuncture can help.
As well, treatment has immediate effect, so if you arrive with a headache, you will leave with either a diminished headache/migraine or no headache at all. With regular weekly treatment, headaches reduce in frequency and intensity, and generally within 6 – 8 treatments, they are gone completely.

Benefits of Treatment
Another benefit of having your headaches treated with acupuncture is that, at the same time, you can also have other health issues addressed, like aches or pains, problems with digestion, low energy, stress, whatever you would like help with. As Chinese medicine is a holistic method, many things can be treated at the same time, and in the end, acupuncture will relax your body and help your mind to feel more balanced and clear, ultimately leading you to a better and better quality of health.
